Incredible Black Owned Wineries in Napa and Sonoma

You’re in Napa or Sonoma and wondering out of all the choices, which wineries should you visit.  In case you need a quick breakdown on the differences between Napa and Sonoma, check out my post here.   For now, let’s get you familiar with 3 incredible black owned wineries.

Brown Estate

Known as the first black owned winery in Napa Valley, the family owned Brown Estate sits in the north-eastern part of the valley on 450 acres of property in St. Helena.  Zinfandel is their flagship varietal and was the first planting done on the property almost 30 years ago.  They also have cabernet sauvignon and rose’ available as options.  The winery in St. Helena isn’t open to the public, so head to the tasting room which is in downtown Napa.  Make note that reservations are required and they do not take walk-ins.

The tasting room has a very chill vibe.  Located on the 2nd floor in a renovated and restored building, it has both a bar and lounge area.  With an introductory flight (samples of their different wines) or a zinfandel only tasting, you’re sure to find something you’ll want to take home.

J Moss Winery

You can find J Moss Winery in the southern part of the Napa Valley in what’s called the “Wine Crusher District”.  It’s a small, boutique, family owned winery focused on cabernet sauvignon but also offering merlot and chardonnay.

Their tasting room is located in front of the winery and reservations are required.  Tastings are highly specialized and include a visit to the winery production area.  If available, either James or his wife Janet may host your tasting.  That’s how welcoming they want the experience to be.

Corner 103

If you’re looking to learn more about wine and how it can amplify and magnify the flavor of your food, you need to head to Corner 103 in Sonoma.  Not only will they highlight how food and wine go together, you’ll learn how to taste wine, which glasses to serve the wine in and which temperature is best.

Their tastings are by reservation and they are open 7 days a week.  One of the things I really like about Corner 103 is the variety of information they share.  You’ll find tempting recipes to try (if you like to cook or bake) that they pair with wine.  You know I’m eyeing the chocolate chunk cookies!

There are plenty of larger, corporate owned wineries in both the Napa Valley and Sonoma, but think local and enjoy a more intimate wine tasting experience in one of these black owned wineries.

Until next time…

May the road rise to meet you and the wind be at your back.
