Jae’s Check in: May the 4th Be With You

This is going to be a stretch to get to George Lucas this month, but here we go.  May the 4th Be With You folks!  The Star Wars crowd will get it.  Even if you’re Star Wars adjacent like I am, it’s still going to make sense.  My brother forced me to sit through all 3 of the original movies back when we were kids.  He got the set for Christmas one year and I basically had no choice.

May the 4th, George Lucas and a museum

Star Wars day is celebrated on the 4th of May every year. It’s when all of fandom commemorates all things Star Wars.  The franchise creator, George Lucas, is making his mark in Los Angeles via the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art going up south of DTLA.

The museum plan was turned away twice by San Francisco and finally found a landing spot in Los Angeles in 2018.  I find this to be a tad ironic because even though Mr. Lucas studied film at USC, most of his time has been spent at Skywalker Ranch in Northern California.  Why they weren’t interested in his museum is beyond me, but we’re not going to dive into that here.

In the collection there are political cartoons, science-fiction illustrations…figurative art, but you’ll also find early examples of comic strips, posters and archival material from his films.  The museum is focused on “storytelling through images” as noted at the website.  It sounds like a really awesome collection that I can’t wait to see.

Lucas Museum Location

Flying into LAX, depending on which side of the plane you’re sitting, you’ll see the building coming into form by the Los Angeles Coliseum in Exposition Park.  I cover both of these in upcoming posts.  It’s very centrally located and will provide another cool museum to check out in the Exposition Park area.  It’s set to open in 2025, so mark your calendars and keep this option in mind when planning your LA visit.

In the meantime, May the 4th Be With You and enjoy all things Star Wars.

I know that was a stretch, but the 4th, George Lucas and his new museum…it kinda flows right?  Oh, just let me have this one.

Until next time, may the road rise to meet you and the wind be at your back.
