The Griffith Park Observatory

I think there are a lot of school kids who at one point in elementary have a field trip to Griffith Park Observatory.  It’s in a great location on Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park and you simply can’t beat it for what it has to offer.

A Concert and Adele?

It’s both an observatory and a planetarium.  And for those who were paying attention, it can also be an amazing venue for a concert.  Yes, I’m looking at you, Adele fans.  Did you catch her concert special this past November, held at Griffith Park and aired on CBS?

Admission, To Do, Parking

Here’s the best part: admission to the Observatory Building, the grounds and the public telescope is free (note there is a charge to see a show at the planetarium).  Apparently Mr. Griffith back in the day, 1896 to be a tad more exact, donated the land for the park.  To add to that, when the Observatory was built, he gave that over to the City of Los Angeles too, directing it to be for the public with no admission charge.  Well, thank you very much!

The Oschin Planetarium has different shows with a live host.  On average they last about 35 minutes and there’s usually more than one to choose from.  There are also films, live programs and demonstrations at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater.  These are sometimes free and on a first come, first served basis for seating.  They average about 30 minutes.

If you go to see the exhibits or to simply wander around the grounds, they’re open every day except Mondays.  There’s paid parking near the observatory or free parking downhill (about a mile).

Go to get your fill of astronomy, gorgeous views of Los Angeles or to simply take in some fresh air in an iconic spot.  And if you’re one of the lucky ones to check out a special event, just call me jealous!

Until next time…

May the road rise to meet you and the wind be at your back.
