Santa Cruz Boardwalk

Let’s go check out the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.  Yes, another one of the amusement parks in California, but it’s unique because it’s one of the oldest surviving and one of the few by the beach.  Sun, surf, rides and food.  What more do you need?

A Little Boardwalk History

A little history to get us started…the park has been around since 1907 and the entire Boardwalk is designated as a historic landmark.  It has been called the “Coney Island of the West” but to us, it stands on its own and is uniquely Californian.

Probably the most famous ride is the Big Dipper.  It opened in 1924 and is the 4th oldest coaster in the US.  You’ve seen it in movies and most pictures of Santa Cruz most likely will have the coaster somewhere.  If you’re a roller coaster fan, definitely check it out.

Boardwalk Rides and Things to Do

You’ll find other typical amusement park rides like the Cyclone where you spin around in a circle standing up.  The Freefall which like the name implies takes you up and drops you like a lead balloon.  The Fireball which they claim is one of the more popular rides there. This one is a swing and spin.  You’ve got to like heights to appreciate it.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  And of course, they have a ferris wheel, a log water ride, carousel and swings.   Also check out the Sky Glider which is a perfect way to put yourself in time out for a bit and glide over the boardwalk to take in the great views.

I should also mention Neptune’s Kingdom which is an entertainment center on the Boardwalk.  In there you’ll find a mini golf course, air hockey, pool, pinball and arcade games.  And of course food!

Boardwalk Food

Speaking of…  You’ll have worked up an appetite for sure, so check out the Boardwalk Grille (they serve breakfast on the weekends!!), Beachside BBQ or any of the many restaurants in the area which you can find here.  Keep in mind that most do cashless payments only or you can get a My Boardwalk Card which you can charge up and pay as you go.  More details on the card are here.

Santa Cruz has a really fun ocean front.  Drop by the Boardwalk, take in some rides and food and be a kid again.  Just go enjoy yourself!!!

Until next time,

May the road rise to meet you and the wind be at your back
